Latvian parliament speaker stands in for hospitalized head of state

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Latvian parliament speaker Inara Murniece will be standing in for hospitalized President President Raimonds Vejonis while he recovers from a virus infection, the president's office said Tuesday.

Upon assessing the president's health condition, doctors decided on Tuesday to transfer Vejonis to Pauls Stradins Hospital from Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital, where he will undergo additional examination and treatment to prevent risks of infection-related complications.

"The president's powers have temporary been given to the parliament speaker so that the president can concentrate all his strength and attention on his recovery," a spokesperson said.

Vejonis was taken to Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital on Monday morning with what his spokesman Gusts Kikusts described as a virus infection. Enditem
