IAEA to establish new office for verification of Iran's nuclear activities

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

The United Nations nuclear agency on Tuesday said it planned to set up an office to verify and monitor Iran's nuclear activities.

The new office would replace the special Iran task force of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s department of safeguards which had been working on the verification of Iran's nuclear plan, said IAEA chief Yukiya Amano.

Monitored by IAEA, Iran finished all the steps required under the nuclear deal reached with world powers in July last year in Vienna to significantly scale back its nuclear plan in exchange for relief of tough sanctions imposed on the Middle Eastern country.

As the past disputed issues of Tehran's atomic plan have been resolved, especially the alleged possible nuclear bomb research program, in light of the historic deal, the IAEA would no longer need to investigate this issue.

Western states last week lifted the related sanctions imposed on Iran, marking an apparent end to the decade-long disputed issue. Endit
