U.S. sends team to W. India to probe tourist's death

Xinhua, January 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

A controversy has broken out between India and the United States over the mysterious death of a U.S tourist in the western state of Goa last week.

"A team of officials from the U.S. has arrived in Goa to investigate the mysterious death of the 30-year-old Caitanya Lila Holt," a senior government official said, on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. tourist was declared dead at a hospital in Goa, where he was rushed to by local police who claimed that he choked to death on muddy water after palling into a paddy field.

In fact, according to police, Holt had fallen into the paddy field after being chased by local residents who mistook him as a thief.

"The U.S. is unwilling to buy the police's version and the team is now probing the circumstances leading to his death," the official said, on condition of anonymity.

"The U.S. team has sought all details from the police about the death and will determine the future course of action, following the probe." Endit
