PSV push Feyenoord back in Dutch title race

Xinhua, January 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

After a winter break of one month the Dutch Eredivisie resumed with PSV beating Feyenoord 2-0 in a clash between the two Dutch giants in Rotterdam on Sunday.

After a disappointing first half PSV started the second part strongly, created some chances and scored through Hector Moreno. The Mexican defender scored, on his 28th birthday, at the second post after a cross by Davy Propper.

Feyenoord hunted for the equalizer in the remainder of the match and had some chances via Michiel Kramer and Dirk Kuijt. In addition, a goal by Eljero Elia was disallowed for offside.

The home-team did not manage to find the net, but on the other side Luciano Narsingh finished a counter attack to make it 2-0. Due to the defeat Feyenoord suffered a major blow in the race for the Dutch title.

Also on Sunday league leaders Ajax, without injured captain Davy Klaassen, started 2016 with a 1-0 win at ADO Den Haag in The Hague. Amin Younes became match winner in the 21st minute. The German winger received a long ball from Joel Veltman, chipped the ball past ADO defender Vito Wormgoor and scored.

Late in the second half both teams had chances to score, but Mike Havenaar missed a major heading opportunity on behalf of the home-team and Viktor Fischer wasted the chance to secure the victory. Despite some pressure in the final minutes Ajax held on to win the match 1-0.

The match was disturbed by racist chants and sounds by part of the ADO fans, especially towards Ajax midfielder Riechedly Bazoer, which only seemed to stop after two warnings by the stadium speaker. Referee Pol van Boekel decided not to stop the match, but the Dutch football association KNVB announced it will investigate the case.

On Friday Heracles Almelo started the second half of the season with a 4-0 defeat in the derby at FC Twente. Vitesse defeated SC Cambuur 2-0 in Leeuwarden on Saturday, while PEC Zwolle crushed sc Heerenveen 5-2.

Ajax now lead the table with 44 points from 18 matches, followed by reigning champions PSV (41), Feyenoord (36) are now on eight points, followed by Vitesse (31) and Heracles (30). Endit
