1 civilian killed in southern Afghan blast

Xinhua, January 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

One civilian had been killed and two others wounded in a blast in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar, police said on Sunday.

"On Saturday night, one civilian was killed and two others were wounded after a vehicle touched off an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Maiwand district of Kandahar. All the victims were male and their vehicle was destroyed in the blast," Zia Durrani, provincial police spokesman told Xinhua.

The killed and the injured were shifted to a district hospital by a police unit.

The province is notorious for poppy growing and militancy.

The Taliban militant group has been using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to target security forces, but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians, according to military officials.

A total of 18 IEDs and roadside bombs were discovered and defused by Afghan army personnel in Kandahar and neighboring Zabul province on Saturday, the country's Defense Ministry said earlier on Sunday. Enditem
