A pre-trial investigation conducted by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has shown that an Iraqi man was suspected of organizing illegal entries into Finland, Finnish media reported on Thursday.

The man is accused of smuggling several persons from Turkey to Finland via Tornio, a northern Finnish town bordering Sweden, from September to November last year.

Last November, the Iraqi national was detained by police from an emergency shelter arranged for asylum seekers in Lahti, southern Finland, but was later released, said Finnish national broadcaster Yle.

NBI has completed the pre-trial investigation, and the suspect is now waiting for prosecution in Finland.

More than 32,500 asylum seekers arrived in Finland in 2015.

Last week, the Finnish Border Guard uncovered a major human trafficking case, in which 18 people of Iraqi background were suspected of illegally smuggling 68 Iraqis into Finland from October 2014 to September 2015. Endit
