Denmark issues travel advice for Turkey after Istanbul explosion

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Denmark's ministry of foreign affairs has issued a travel warning for Turkey after the explosion in Istanbul on Tuesday that left 10 people dead and 15 others wounded.

"Danes in Istanbul should, for now, avoid public places and other places where many people are gathered. Danes should always follow local authorities' instructions," the ministry said in a statement.

"Terrorist attacks are generally directed against Turkish military and police or political gatherings and demonstrations, but it cannot be excluded that tourists can also be hit, either deliberately or by accident," the ministry said.

Though the ministry has not changed the overall security level for Turkey, it advised Danish travelers to "keep a safe distance from all political meetings and demonstrations."

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the explosion that rocked Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet district on Tuesday was carried out by a suicide bomber of Syrian origin. Endit
