JLR plans massive 750-mln-dollar expansion in Coventry

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thousands of new jobs in the automotive industry could be created in England's Midlands region after Jaguar Land Rover and Coventry City Council announced Tuesday plans to consult on an expansion of JLR's research and development center in the city.

The ambitious expansion plans were described by Coventry council leader Ann Lucas as a game changer for the city.

Lucas said JLR's proposals will cement Coventry's role at the heart of automotive innovation, growth and success.

"Our two world class universities, our can-do attitude and our ability to work with the private sector to deliver what successful manufacturers need if they are to stay and expand here have all played their part in convincing Jaguar Land Rover that Coventry is the right place to be at the heart of their expansion plans," she said in a statement issued by city hall officials.

The politician added: "Jaguar Land Rover - one of Britain's greatest success stories - is putting its faith in this city to deliver its future and we will not let them down."

Confirmation of a project, estimated to be costing around 750 million U.S. dollars came with the city council and JLR announcing plans to consult with the public on an expansion of the company's research and development center in the Whitley area of the city.

Local media are quoting business leaders as saying up to 6,000 jobs will be created in Coventry as a result of the JLR expansion.

Coventry City Council and Jaguar Land Rover will carry out public consultations on the scheme between January 21 and 23. Endit
