1st LD Writethru: Death toll in Cambodian truck crash rises to 5 as 68 others injured

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The death toll in a collision between two trucks carrying garment workers in western Cambodia rose to 5, as 68 others were injured, according to a Labor Ministry's statement on Tuesday.

The accident took place at about 6:30 a.m. local time Tuesday in Kong Pisei district in Kampong Speu province when the two vehicles collided, leaving one truck turned upside down.

"Five (female) workers at the Now Corp garment factory were killed and 68 others were wounded in the accident," the statement said, expressing condolences to the family members of the dead and injured.

Ma Savath, governor of Kong Pisei district, said the two trucks were taking workers to factories when the accident happened. All the injured workers had been rushed to hospitals soon after the fatal crash.

Transporting garment factory workers in open trucks to and from factories is common in this Southeast Asian country. In May last year, a truck carrying garment workers crashed into a passenger bus in southeastern Svay Rieng province, leaving 18 workers dead. Endit
