Peru's Alan Garcia seeks third shot at presidency

Xinhua, January 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Peru's former President Alan Garcia on Monday announced his candidacy for president in elections scheduled on April 10, aiming to win a third term for the 2016-2021 period.

Speaking before the People's Alliance political coalition, he urged other presidential candidates not to resort to insults and recriminations during the electoral campaign.

The voters want to hear concrete proposals to resolve their social and economic problems, he said.

Monday was the deadline for politicians to submit their applications to run for the presidency.

After registering his candidacy at the Electoral Board in Peru's capital Lima, Garcia said that one of his first tasks should he become president would be to rein in the crime wave currently devastating Peruvian society.

Garcia also added he would order the Armed Forces to be present in the streets to reduce crime.

According to the latest polls, Garcia has only seven percent support, much lower than the current top three presidential candidates.

Seventeen candidates of varying political backgrounds have put their names forward for the presidency. Garcia is running for the center-left Peruvian Aprista Party (APRA).

Alan Garcia's first tenure from 1985 to 1990 was marked by a nationwide economic crisis, and his second term from 2006 to 2010 saw repeated complaints of corruption by the APRA. Endi
