U.S. jobless rate unchanged at 5 percent in December

The U.S. jobless rate remained unchanged at 5 percent for the third month in a row, and the non-farm sector added 292,000 more jobs, the Labor Department reported on Friday.

The number of long-term unemployed, referring to those jobless for 27 weeks or more, was 2.1 million in December, accounting for 26.3 percent of all the unemployed.

The labor force participation rate, the share of the working-age population employed or looking for a job, stood at 62.6 percent, little changed from the previous month.

Average hourly earnings was little changed at 25.24 U.S. dollars in December after rising 5 cents in November.

The Labor Department also revised up the previous two months' job gains as the October and November data showed 50,000 more jobs than previously reported. Endi
