UN-AU peacekeepers' convoy ambushed in Darfur, one injured

Xinhua, January 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

A convoy of the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) was ambushed Thursday in North Darfur, Sudan, leaving one peacekeeper injured.

"A UNAMID patrol was ambushed today by an unidentified armed group near Anka, North Darfur, approximately 55 kilometers north of Kutum," Stephane Dujarric told a regular briefing at the UN headquarters in New York Thursday.

The armed elements, who outnumbered the peacekeepers, seized one machine gun, four rifles and rounds of ammunition from the peacekeepers, said Dujarric, who added that a peacekeeper was injured in the incident.

The joint mission condemned the attack and is working with the Sudanese authorities to probe the incident, said the spokesman.

UNAMID is a joint African Union and United Nations peacekeeping mission formally established by the Security Council on July 31, 2007 to bring stability to the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan while peace talks on a final settlement continue. Endit
