The Chief Minister of Indian-controlled Kashmir Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died at the age of 79 Thursday morning at India's premier hospital - All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, officials said.

"He was admitted in AIIMS on Dec. 24 and was being treated for sepsis and decreased blood counts besides pneumonia," a hospital official said.

"For quite some days he was critical and shifted to the intensive care unit of the hospital, where he was later put on ventilator."

Sayeed was sworn in as chief minister of restive Indian-controlled Kashmir last year for a tenure of six years and was heading a coalition government with rightwing Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Janta Party.

His daughter Mehbooba Mufti, a parliamentarian, is likely to become his successor, local media reported.

Former chief minister of the region Omar Abdullah has expressed grief and sympathy over Sayeed's demise. Enditem
