German national dies at sea in Tonga

Xinhua, January 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

A German national has been found dead at sea in Tonga, local news website Matangi Tonga reported Thursday.

Wolfgang Borner, 59, was reported missing on Dec. 28, and his body was discovered by a group of divers who were out fishing at night on Dec. 30 near Tonga's Eua island.

According to the divers, they found human remains, tied with a rope on the ankles to a rock on the seabed.

Police divers visited the site on Dec. 31 and confirmed that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. An immediate burial was ordered after the remains had been recovered and examined by doctors.

The Tonga Police has been investigating Borner's death, and a suicide has not been ruled out, said Salote Tonga, a police spokesperson.

Borner, who came from Berlin, Germany, had been living and working in the Pacific island kingdom for the past six years. He was employed by a local diving company. Enditem
