1stLD Writethru: Indian security forces kill 6th gunman at airbase under attack

Xinhua, January 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indian security forces killed the sixth gunman on Monday inside an airbase which was attacked by militants at the weekend, said local TV channel Times Now.

This could have brought an end to a three-day gunfight with militants at the Pathankot airbase in the northern Punjab state near the Pakistan border, if confirmed by officials.

Officials said earlier that two gunmen were still holed up in a building at the base as of Monday morning.

The gunmen attacked the airbase Saturday morning, which has left seven military personnel and five attackers dead.

India blame Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed militant outfit for the attack.

The attack comes just days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Lahore to give boost to the renewed peace initiative between two neighbors. Enditem
