Zambia's largest trade union on Thursday welcomed the government's decision to introduce a new labor law that prohibits employing of workers on a casual basis and unjustified termination of workers' contracts.
On Wednesday, Minister of Labor and Social Security Fackson Shamenda said Zambia has banned casualization of jobs and unjustified termination of contracts of employment following President Edgar Lungu's signing of a new employment law.
Nkole Chishimba, the president of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), said the casualization of labor had dented trade union's efforts to fight for improved conditions of service for workers in the country.
He told reporters that the new law will go a long way in helping the union fight for better conditions of service for workers and ensure protection of workers' rights.
He said with the amendment of the law, the union is certain that jobs in the country will now be secure in line with the Decent Work Agenda of the International Labor Organization.
The government also intends to introduce a toll-free hotline where victims can report any abuse of their rights by their employers. Endit
