Brazil midfielder Renato on Schalke radar

Xinhua, January 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Corinthians and Brazil international midfielder Renato Augusto is close to a 6.4 million-euro move to Schalke 04, according to media reports.

Schalke's Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkuson, who own 50% of the player's economic rights, are hoping a deal can be struck during the European January transfer window.

"(The transfer) would be very good for us," Leverkuson manager Jonas Boldt was quoted as saying by the Uol news portal.

"He is playing well again after some injuries but there was never any doubting his quality. Why shouldn't we benefit from that now that he is better?"

Renato made 101 first-team appearances for the German outfit from 2008 to 2012 but his final season at the club was blighted by injury.

He was loaned out to Corinthians in 2013 in a deal that also saw the Brazilian side acquire 50% of his economic rights.

A move could be stymied by Corinthians unwillingness to part with more of their first-team players.

The defending Brazilian league winners have already lost Jadson to Tianjin Songjiang, and fellow midfielder Elias is reportedly also in talks with the Chinese club. Endit
