Indian PM stresses need for political solution in Nepal

Xinhua, December 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stressed the need for finding a durable solution to the political problems in Nepal, during a telephonic conversation with his Nepalese counterpart K.P. Sharma Oli.

"Prime Minister (Modi) emphasized the importance of finding a durable solution to the political problems facing Nepal based on consensus...," an External Affairs Ministry statement said, adding that "Modi extended his good wishes to the friendly people of Nepal for the New Year 2016."

More than 50 people have been killed in the past four months in violent protests over the adoption of a new constitution by Nepal. Some political parties and ethnic groups in Nepal have been demanding amendments in the statute that they feel are "discriminatory."

Nepal is facing serious shortage of essential supplies like food, medicines and fuel due to the blockade of the land border in the wake of the ongoing protests. Endit
