2nd LD Writethru: 6 killed, 12 injured in building collapse in northern India

Xinhua, December 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least six people were killed and over a dozen others injured in a building collapse in the central government-controlled territory of Chandigarh in northern India Monday, a senior police official said.

"The incident happened when a building next to a construction site collapsed in Chandigarh's Transport Nagar area around 11:30 a.m. (local time). Some 20 laborers were working at the site when the building collapsed," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While six bodies have been pulled out of the debris, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious.

"Two of the injured laborers stand very little chance of survival," the official said.

Senior officials have rushed to the spot and supervising the rescue operations, he said, adding a probe has been ordered into the incident and the owner and contractor of the under construction building have been arrested on charges of negligence.

Building collapses are common in India because of poor construction practices, and several people die every year in such incidents across the country. Endit
