Train derails in Australia with load of sulphuric acid

Xinhua, December 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 2-km exclusion zone was in place in Queensland on Monday after a freight train carrying 200,000 liters of sulphuric acid derailed in Australia.

According to local police, the accident happened at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, 20 km east of Julia Creek in northwest Queensland.

Sulphuric acid is a highly corrosive substance that can cause severe burns on contact with skin.

Three train staff are in hospital with minor injuries and the site was quickly declared an emergency.

The extent of any acid leakage remains unclear, said Queensland Police, and the cause of the accident was not yet known.

Queensland has been affected by flooding, which has cut the access to the site. Enditem
