Minsk deal on Ukraine to be extended through 2016

Xinhua, December 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Minsk agreement on the Ukraine crisis will be extended through 2016 as parties involved have failed to fully implement the deal, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Thursday.

"Until the peaceful settlement in southeastern Ukraine is achieved, we will demand from our Ukrainian partners as well as from other partners in the Normandy Four group to take active action... because the entire world, and primarily Ukraine, is interested in peace and stability coming to eastern Ukraine," Russian deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin was quoted as saying in an interview with RIA Novosti.

In mid-February, leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany, and France reached a landmark cease-fire deal in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, providing a clear 12-point roadmap for the resolution of the conflict that has claimed more than 9,000 lives.

Although the deal has not been fully implemented and the road is neither quick nor easy, currently a much-anticipated peace is coming to the restive region as guns have fallen almost silent along the entire frontline and displaced people are returning. Endi
