Thai nationals in Myanmar alerted to watch out for own safety

Xinhua, December 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thai nationals in Myanmar are being advised against showing up as Thai at public places throughout the neighboring state for the time being, following Thursday's death penalty verdict delivered to two Myanmar rapist-killer convicts in Thailand.

The Thai embassy in the Myanmar capital city Nay Pyi Taw flashed an alert to all Thai nationals in Myanmar to watch out for their own safety and to not identify themselves as Thai anywhere inside that country in the wake of the Thai court ruling which landed the Myanmar rapist-killer convicts, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo, the death penalty.

Myanmar people have been urged to gather in protest of the Thai court verdict against their fellow countrymen outside the Thai embassy on Friday, said an official of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Thais in Myanmar are strongly suggested to closely monitor and follow the embassy's advice while keeping a very low profile and avoiding public places.

The young Myanmar couple were ruled as guilty by the court in Surat Thani province of the raping and murder charges after a couple of British tourists were killed in Koh Tao, an island on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, last year. Enditem
