Cambodian PM tells farmers to save water as rainy season delays

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday advised farmers to save water for public consumption, as annual rainy season, which always starts in early May, will delay until mid-July due to the impacts of El Nino.

In a circular, the prime minister told farmers not to use water for dry-season rice paddy in order to save it for daily use and other subsidiary crops.

"Ministries, concerned institutions, local authorities at all levels must take measures to manage water properly in order to supply for daily use only until rains fall," he said.

The Southeast Asian country was hit by drought early this year, which affected about 234,695 hectares of rainy-season rice seedlings, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Enditem
