Update: One killed, one wounded in explosion in Istanbul's airport

Xinhua, December 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

One died and one was wounded after the explosion occurred in Istanbul's international Sabiha Gokcen airport on Wednesday, Turkish media reported.

The woman cleaning staff Zehra Yamac lost her life while another one, Canan Burgulu, was injured during the explosion that occurred in the plane parking area at 2 a.m. local time (0000 GMT), private Dogan news agency said.

During the explosion, the two women were on a nearby plane belonging to Turkish Pegasus Airlines and had been rushed to the hospital, Pegasus Airlines earlier announced in a written statement.

"There were no passengers inside the boarding bridge or inside our plane," the statement added.

The cause of the explosion is still not clear, while some witnesses told Dogan that they heard three consecutive explosions.

Heavy security measures were taken in the area while police forces and fire engines were dispatched to the airport.

Police started an extensive investigation at the airport, which is located on the Asian side of the city.

Special teams with long barreled weapons backed up with helicopters have been searching the cars in the area. Endit
