The Burundian Security Council rejected the African Union (AU) resolution last week on deploying troops in Burundi, the country's Security Minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni said Tuesday in a statement.
"The Burundian Security Council is against the AU resolution on sending troops to Burundi. They are not necessary because our defense and security forces are famous and highly experienced. They are able to protect the citizens," said Bunyoni.
The Security Council commended the United Nations (UN) for its fairness on Burundi's situation, urging the AU to take the UN as a "good example," as the UN has understood "initiatives" of the Burundian government on peace and democracy building.
The council urged the government to cooperate with the UN Refugee Agency on the repatriation of Burundian refugees who fled the country since the start of the political crisis in April.
On Thursday, the AU Peace and Security Council passed a resolution on the deployment of 5,000 troops to prevent massive killings or genocide taking place in Burundi without the government's consent.
Since April, violence has left over 400 dead in the east African nation, according to civil society groups. Endi
