Jamaican former mayor shot at home in robbery

Xinhua, December 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Raymoth Notice, former mayor of Spanish Town, Jamaica, was shot at home in a robbery on Monday.

Doctors said he was in critical conditions after being shot several times in his body and an emergency surgery was needed.

It is reported that two men broke into Notice's home on Monday morning demanding for money and they attacked him after being turned down.

Notice first came to public attention for his service in the prison system. He later entered representational politics on behalf of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) at both the local government and the national.

After losing the bid for the parliament seat in last general elections in 2011, he served as a councilor in parish council and became mayor of Spanish Town.

The JLP leader Andrew Holness issued a statement to express "shock and deep regret" over the attack on Notice.

"This morning's attack on Dr. Notice is a frightening but telling reminder of just how vulnerable we are as law-abiding citizens to the criminal elements in our midst," the opposition leader said.

"As peace-loving Jamaicans, we must rise up against these vicious criminals and send an unmistakable sign that we are resolved to living in a peaceful, prosperous and orderly society," he added.

Police said investigators were still processing the scene and gathering information to identify the gunmen. Endi
