Vietnam arrests Singaporean online gambling ringleader

Xinhua, December 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vietnamese police on Tuesday detained a 31-year-old Singaporean man and three of his Vietnamese accomplices from Ho Chi Minh City.

The four detainees include ringleader Wong Boon Leong, Nguyen Van Nam, 33, Nguyen Thi Kim Cuc, 29, and Vo Dang Thanh Trung, 31, the online version of local newspaper Thanh Nien (Young People) reported.

After searching Leong's residence in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnamese police confiscated many documents, invoices and hi-tech equipment relating to online gambling through a website whose servers are based in the Philippines.

The gambling ring has attracted thousands of gamblers which have made total bets worth trillions of Vietnamese dong (dozens of million U.S. dollars).

Gambling, except in government licensed casinos, is illegal in Vietnam. Anyone found to be in violation of this law is subject to steep fines and/or a severe prison sentence. Access to licensed casinos is restricted to holders of foreign passports. Endit
