Demarcation of maritime, land zones significant to Macao's diversified development: chief executive

Xinhua, December 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The draft demarcating the maritime and land zones of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) reflected the central government's support for Macao, the region's chief executive said here Wednesday.

Chui Sai On, chief executive of the Macao SAR, spoke highly of the draft map passed by China's State Council Wednesday on demarcating the maritime and land zones of the Macao, and thanked the central government and neighboring Guangdong Province for the coordination work they have done, noting that it is of great significance to helping Macao diversify local economy.

According to the draft, an area of 85 square km of sea east and south of Macao is administered by the SAR. The border inspection building is also demarcated under the administration of Macao.

Chui said the move will help improve Macao's rule of law, as well as its full and accurate implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR.

This will also expand the space for Macao's development, and accelerate the appropriate diversification and sustainable development of the local economy, Chui said in a written statement Wednesday.

Demarcation of Macao's maritime, land zones would boost cooperation between Macao and the neighboring regions like Guangdong and Hong Kong, and at the same time lay a solid foundation for Macao to improve the well-being of its locals, he added.

Geographic space is vital for Macao in its process of transforming into a world tourism and leisure center, and a service platform between the Chinese mainland and Portuguese-speaking countries, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao SAR said in a statement.

The office said it is confident that the SAR government will make a good long-term development plan of the maritime zone and gain full benefits from the policy support of the central government and Guangdong Province.

The adjustment will facilitate the cooperation between Macao and neighboring regions in the development of marine economy, said the office, noting that it is willing to provide more assistance to promote in-depth exchanges and cooperation between Macao and the mainland. Endit
