2 police killed, 3 wounded in bomb attack in SE Turkey

Xinhua, December 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two policemen were killed and three others wounded in a bomb attack in southeastern Turkey on Tuesday, private Dogan news agency reported.

A group of outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) staged the bomb attack against the Turkish police on Diyarbakir-Silvan highway in Silvan town of Diyarbakir province Tuesday Afternoon, according to the report.

The bomb controlled by the PKK rebels exploded when a Turkish armored police vehicle was passing on the highway in the town, leaving five policemen wounded on the scene, said the report, adding that two of the wounded died in hospital.

Turkish security forces have launched an operation in fight against the PKK militants who escaped after the bomb attack, added the report.

The PKK negotiated a ceasefire with Ankara in 2013, but the truce fell apart in the wake of a suicide bomb attack on July 20, which killed 33 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists in the border town of Suruc in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa.

Tensions have been running high, especially in southeastern Turkey, as major military operations against PKK militants have been under way since July. Endit
