European Commission launches infringement case against Hungary over asylum law

Xinhua, December 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission on Thursday launched an "infringement case" against Hungary over its asylum legislation.

The EU's executive body said there are several major reasons why it initiated the infringement procedure, including aspects of asylum procedures, rights to translation and interpretation and the fundamental right to an effective remedy and to a fair trial.

"As a consequence of these concerns, the Commission has today initiated an infringement procedure and sent a letter of formal notice to Hungary. The Hungarian authorities have two months to respond to the Commission," the EU executive said.

The commission added it will continue bilateral contacts with the Hungarian authorities and will request additional clarification on other outstanding issues. Endit
