European Commission refers Greece to court over illegal landfill

The European Commission said on Thursday it has referred Greece to the Court of Justice of the EU over illegal landfill which posed a serious risk for human health and the environment.

The EU's executive body said in a statement it was filing the infringement proceedings due to poor waste management at a landfill on the island of Corfu.

"Various on-site inspections by national authorities have revealed that the Temploni landfill is operating very poorly and in breach of EU legislation," the statement said.

Under EU law, only safe and controlled landfill activities should be carried out in Europe. Endit
