United Nations awarded Olympic Cup

Xinhua, December 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday welcomed The International Olympic Committee's decision to award the world body the Olympic Cup, hailing it as "a sign of the close partnership between the two organizations."

"The secretary-general was honored to learn about the decision the International Olympic Committee to award the Olympic Cup to the United Nations," Ban's spokesman told reporters here. "He is pleased to receive it on behalf of the Organization."

"Our collaboration is based on many shared values and ideals, and the common goal of using the power of sport to promote development and peace," said Ban.

The secretary-general is particularly grateful to the International Olympic Committee and its President, Thomas Bach, for their strong commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Olympic Cup, instituted by Pierre de Coubertin in 1906, is an award given annually by the International Olympic Committee to an institution or association with a record of merit and integrity in actively developing the Olympic Movement. Endit
