European Commission refers Poland to EU court over poor air quality

Xinhua, December 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission decided on Thursday to refer Poland to the Court of Justice of the EU over poor air quality.

The EU's executive body in a statement said persistently high levels of dust particles posed a major risk to public health in Poland.

"The daily limit values for the airborne particles (PM10) have been persistently exceeded in 35 out of 46 air quality zones at least for the last five years, including 2014," the commission said.

The legislative and administrative measures taken so far to limit this persisting non-compliance have been deemed insufficient by the commission, the statement added, leading to the decision to refer Poland to court.

The commission is also pursuing infringement actions for excessive fine dust levels against 16 member states including Belgium, Germany, Spain, France and Sweden. A case has been brought to the court against Bulgaria. Endit
