Millions of Bangladeshis overseas in the first five months of the current 2015-16 fiscal year ending June next year remitted home 6.17 billion U.S. dollars, about 1 percent less than a year earlier, a central bank official said Wednesday.

The remittance in November alone stood at 1.14 billion dollars, a drop of 3.76 percent year on year, said the Bangladesh Bank official who preferred to be unnamed.

The inflow remittance is one of the key sources of foreign exchange for the impoverished nation.

In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, nearly 9 million Bangladeshis overseas remitted a record high of 15.3 billion U.S. dollars, according to central bank data.

Most of the remittances come from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Kuwait, Britain, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, Bahrain, Italy and Australia. Enditem
