Number of refugees registered in Germany reaches 1 million: newspaper

Xinhua, December 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of refugees registered in Germany officially reached one million three weeks before the end of 2015, Germany's Bild newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The exact millionth refugee was registered on Tuesday shortly before 12 p.m. local time, the newspaper quoted a spokeswoman for the Bavarian Ministry of Social Affairs as saying.

So many asylum-seekers were registered from January until Tuesday in initial reception system "Easy" and then accommodated throughout Germany, according to Bavarian Social Minister Emilia Mueller.

Alone in November, there were more than 200,000 newly registered asylum seekers in Germany, the report said.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere had predicted to the end of this year a number of 800,000 asylum seekers.

"It has been exceeded because of the growing numbers especially since mid-August," the minister said on Monday. Enditem
