Uganda's national football team was on Tuesday involved in a fatal accident in the eastern part of the country.

The Cranes team bus crushed into a commuter taxi after its tyre burst in Kamomkoli in Budaka district.

"Two players picked minor injuries, but they have managed to board another bus and travelled to Kampala," said Uganda FA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson.

George Ngaruye, a police officer in the region said that five people died on the spot in the taxi and the rest were rushed to Mbale Hospital in critical condition.

"We are trying to analyse what actually happened but it was a terrible accident," he added.

The team was returning from Soroti State Lodge where they had met President Yoweri Museveni who congratulated them on winning the Council for East and Central African Football Associations Senior Challenge Cup over the weekend.

Early in the morning before traveling back to Kampala, Museveni applauded the team for carrying the national flag high. Endit
