Roundup: Afghan violent incidents kill 2 insurgents, wounds 15 including 1 civilian

The ongoing Afghan militancy and counter-militancy have claimed the lives of two suicide attackers in Taliban former stronghold the southern Kandahar province; while Taliban-related activities have injured 15 people including a civilians since Monday night, officials said Tuesday.

A three-member group of Taliban militants equipped with light arms and suicide vests stormed a police station in Taliban birthplace, the southern Kandahar province, Monday night, triggering gun battle which lasted for several hours.

"Three terrorists attacked the Breshna Kot police station in ninth police district of Kandahar provincial capital the Kandahar city with automatic guns, suicide vests and grenades, triggering heavy fighting," a provincial police official told Xinhua but declined to be identified, saying authorized officials would brief the media after completion of investigation.

"The attack on police station begun at around 06:00 p.m. Monday and police retaliated triggering gun battle which lasted until 10:00 p.m. local time, during which two attackers were killed and another escaped," the official added.

Five more people including four police and a civilian passerby had sustained injuries in the firefight, the official further said.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for Kandahar provincial government, Samim Khapalwak confirmed the attack, saying investigation has been initiated.

Taliban outfit in an online statement on Tuesday confirmed the attack in Kandahar city, claiming a group of suicide attackers stormed police station in Kandahar city Monday night inflicting huge casualties to police.

Similarly, the armed militants attacked police convoy in Wazokhah district of the eastern Paktika province Tuesday morning wounding 10 police personnel, Afsar Khan Sulimankhil the head of Provincial Council of Paktika province confirmed.

Taliban militants also suffered casualties in Wazokhah district, the official said, but couldn't provide details.

Meantime, spokesman for Paktika provincial government, Nabihullah Pirkhil in talks with media said investigation had been initiated into the case.

Moreover, Afghanistan's National Directorate for Security (NDS) or the country's counter-intelligence agency have arrested nine militants in the southern Kandahar province, a statement of the entity released here Tuesday said.

The arrested militants, according to the statement, were involved in conducting terrorist activities including planting mine on Kandahar-Helmand highway and attacking security forces and military convoys in the area.

Both the armed militants and government forces, according to observers, are doing their best to gain more grounds ahead of snowfall in the mountainous Afghanistan. Enditem
