Latvia's outgoing PM endorses interior minister as her possible successor

Xinhua, December 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, who announced her resignation on Monday, has endorsed Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis as her potential successor.

The outgoing premier said at a news conference on Monday that in her view Kozlovskis was the man best suited to take over her job as he had proven his ability to take responsibility in difficult situations.

Straujuma said she would propose Kozlovskis for Latvia's next prime minister at the next board meeting of her center-right Unity party. "He may not be a man posing nicely to journalists but he is a man of action," Straujuma said.

At the same time, Straujuma was not sure the Unity board would support Kozlovskis' candidacy.

Straujuma also believed that most of her Cabinet minister should carry on also in the next government.

Straujuma announced her resignation after an unscheduled meeting with President Raimonds Vejonis on Monday morning. The premier decided to stand down after last weekend's congress of her Unity party.

The premier said that "new ideas, new contribution and new energy are needed" to advance government work. Endit
