Portland Timbers title MLS

Xinhua, December 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portland Timbers crowned the Major League Soccer Cup for the first time after defeating Columbus Crew 2-1 on Monday.

Portland's Diego Valeri scored by taking the advantage of a blunder of the Columbus' goalkeeper only 27 seconds into the game. Rodney Wallace doubled the lead in the seventh minute on a diving header.

The Crew, which had allowed only three goals in four previous playoff matches, narrowed the gap in the 18th minute thanks to Sierra Leone striker Kei Kamara.

"This is special for us," said Valeri, who was named the MVP of the match. "I'm really thankful. I'm happy for myself and my team-mates."

In their fifth MLS season, the Timbers became the third expansion club to win the crown, after the Chicago Fire in 1998 and Real Salt Lake in 2009.  Endi
