2nd LD: Molotov attack on nightclub in Cairo kills 16

Xinhua, December 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Molotov explosives started a fire at a nightclub in Cairo on Friday, killing 16 people and wounding three others, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said.

The Molotov attack appeared to have been triggered by a dispute between staff at the nightclub and a group of youths who were reportedly denied access to the place, the ministry added in a statement.

Earlier, official news agency MENA reported that three men on a motorcycle threw Molotov cocktails into the club in Agouza district in southern Cairo and then fled.

A blaze broke out in a disco attached to a restaurant at the nightclub. TV footage showed thick black smoke pouring through the doorway of the restaurant.

The victims, all of them nightclub staff, were burned to death or died from smoke inhalation, according to state-run Nile TV.

Firefighters put off the fire and a manhunt was launched to arrest the attackers. Endit
