China to select 2015 grassroots heroes

Xinhua, December 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Internet users can now vote to select 10 individuals or groups as the 2015 grassroots heroes, or China's "Good Samaritans."

The vote started Friday and web users will have two weeks to choose from 63 candidates, whose information is available on major websites including the official portal of Xinhua News Agency, the event's sponsor.

Candidates include a group of soldiers who risked their lives defending borders in Tibet during the April Nepal quake, and a disabled woman, called "angel in a wheelchair," who struggled to help people with physical problems find jobs.

A ceremony will be held by Xinhua in January to honor the heroes.

The vote, initiated since 2010, is aimed to promote the good deeds of ordinary people and to improve moral awareness in the Chinese society. Endit
