Belarus seeks 3-bln-USD, 10-year loan from IMF

Xinhua, December 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Belarus is discussing with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) a 3 billion U.S. dollars loan for 10 years, Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said on Tuesday.

Belarus needs to attract IMF resources and secure the best repayment terms possible, Kobyakov said on Tuesday at a meeting chaired by President Alexander Lukashenko on the progress of the talks on the IMF extended funding program.

The loan Belarus is seeking is 3 billion U.S. dollars with an interest rate of 2.28 percent for 10 years, Kobyakov said.

The Belarusian president said it was a good loan which was big enough and with a good interest rate.

Lukashenko said he was open to a range of reforms in talks with the IMF.

A staff team of the IMF visited Belarus in November.

Earlier this year, Belarus expressed willingness to negotiate a new loan program with the IMF. With the support of the World Bank, Belarus has handed over a so-called roadmap for structural reforms to the IMF. Endit
