UN calls for fast-track approach to end AIDS

Xinhua, December 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Marking World AIDS Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called for a fast-track approach to break the epidemic and prevent it from rebounding.

In his message on the day, Ban said the window of opportunity to end AIDS is closing; therefore he called for a fast-track approach to front-load investments and close the gap between needs and services.

"We need to more than double the number of people on life-changing treatment to reach all 37 million of those living with HIV," said Ban. "We need to provide adolescent girls and young women with access to education and real options to protect themselves from HIV."

World AIDS Day is observed around the world on Dec. 1 each year. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, while reflecting on progress such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.

This year, the United Nations calls on the international community to join the fast-track approach to end AIDS by 2030 which is also a part of the newly adopted Sustainable Development Agenda.

The approach that is defined by the world body includes front-loads investments, catalyses innovation for people who need it most, and engaging local leadership for accountable responses. Endit
