Twenty-eight people have so far been diagnosed with HIV in Macedonia during 2015, mainly men, among which one person passed away with advanced infection, Macedonia's health ministry reported on Tuesday.
The health ministry's state councilor, Jovanka Kostovska, declared that "In 2015, 22 million Macedonian denar (about 380,000 U.S. dollars) were used to cover antiretroviral therapy and tests, as well as campaigns to raise awareness and educate on HIV/AIDS prevention."
A total of 270 HIV/AIDS cases have been registered since 1987 in Macedonia. That number is expected to rise up to 300 by mid-2016, it was stated during a news conference on World AIDS day.
In 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Dec. 1 World AIDS day, dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control. Endit
