Roadside bomb kills 3 police in S. Afghanistan

Three police were killed as a roadside bomb struck the van they were riding in in Taliban former stronghold the southern Kandahar province Wednesday evening, spokesman for provincial government Samim Khapalwak said Thursday.

"A mine planted by militants struck a vehicle of police patrol team in Khakriz district yesterday evening leaving three police dead and two others injured," Khapalwak told Xinhua.

The district police chief Sharifullah and another police officer Assadullah were slightly injured in the blast, the official added.

Meanwhile, Taliban outfit in an online statement claimed responsibility for organizing the bomb attack and killing five police personnel including the district police chief.

Kandahar, the birthplace of Taliban militants has been the scene of violent militancy incidents over the past few years. Enditem
