French soldier dies from injuries in Mali: Elysee

Xinhua, November 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A French soldier died from injuries he suffered in northern Mali, said the Elysee on Thursday.

The soldier, a sergeant in a parachute regiment, was injured with two other servicemen on Oct. 13 in northern Mali when a landmine blew up the vehicle they were traveling in, the Elysee said in a statement.

French President Francois Hollande praised the French soldiers for their commitment the mission to consolidate the sovereignty of Mali and to fight against terrorist groups, said the statement.

Ten French soldiers have been killed so far in Mali since France launched its military offensive in January 2013 to crack down on Islamist fighters, who seized control of Mali's northern region a year earlier.

With the support of African countries, France deployed 3,000 troops in the Sahel region last year to combat extremist insurgents and restore security in the area. Endi
