Ship sinks in Fiji; all people on board rescued

Xinhua, November 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A cargo-carrying local ship sank off Suva on Tuesday, with all people on board rescued, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) confirmed.

MV Sulliven was sailing into the Suva Harbour on Tuesday afternoon from the Pacific island country's northern part when it started leaning to one side. The vessel then started sinking and was completely underwater within an hour.

"It is believed there were 27 crew members and four passengers on board, who have all been rescued," said the FBC.

Tugboats from the wharf as well as the navy were dispatched to the site.

Witnesses at the scene told the FBC that they came out on their fibre boats to assist with the rescue after noticing the incident.

The navy and the police are monitoring the situation. Endit
