ECOWAS to send 133 observers to Burkina Faso elections

Xinhua, November 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Economic Committee of West African States (ECOWAS) will deploy a total of 133 observers for the upcoming presidential and general elections to be held on Nov. 29 in Burkina Faso, according to an ECOWAS release that reached Xinhua on Monday.

Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo, former president of transition in Guinea-Bissau, is to lead the ECOWAS electoral observers mission that comprises 120 short-term election observers and 13 long-term observers expected to monitor pre- and post-election operations, according to the release.

This observation mission will work on the bases of transparency, equity and integrity, the release said.

Over 5.5 million registered voters are expected to cast their votes to elect a new president and parliament members, hence to restore constitutional order that was disrupted by a popular uprising that drove Blaise Compaore from power in October 2014.

Fourteen candidates, among them four independent candidates and two women, were approved by the Constitutional Council to take part in the presidential election.

Voting will be conducted at 17,898 polling stations, and 25,000 defense and security forces will be deployed across the country to secure the voting process. Endi
