New UN Libya envoy takes up post, aims to achieve peace in Libya

Martin Kobler started his position on Tuesday as the new Secretary-General's special representative for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, said a UN secretary-general's spokesman.

"Stressing the need for dialogue and unity, Mr. Kobler said that he is determined to work together with all Libyans to achieve the peace that the Libyan people desperately need and truly deserve," said spokesman Stephane Dujarric at Tuesday's noon briefing.

In a statement released upon assuming the post, Kobler said: "I admire the resilience of the Libyan people. They have endured much as a result of the ongoing conflict, the humanitarian crisis and the growing threat of terrorism."

The envoy also laid out his work plan. "In the next few days, I will listen to the members of the political dialogue and the proposed Presidency Council as well as various other Libyan partners to address and finalise the remaining small number of outstanding issues."

Moreover, Kobler said he is "determined to build on the momentum to bring about an endorsement of the Libyan Political Agreement in the immediate future," and he intends to discuss security-related issues with the various Libyan actors, according to his statement.

Prior to the position, Kobler served as the special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In early October, the United Nations proposed a national unity government to end conflict in Libya, a major oil producer in North Africa, which has been witnessing a frayed political process after former leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled during the 2011 political turmoil. Enditem
