Republicans consider drafting Mitt Romney for 2016 White House run: report

Xinhua, November 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Some Republican elites are reportedly talking anew about drafting Mitt Romney despite the 2012 Republican presidential nominee's insistence that he would not run for presidency again, said local media report.

Some in the GOP establishment had come up with a strategy for Romney's late entry to compete for the party's presidential nomination though Romney had so far shown no interest for a candidacy, said the U.S. daily the Washington Post on Friday.

As two presidential candidates with outsider status, New York billionaire developer Donald Trump and retired African-American neurosurgeon Ben Carson, continue to stand atop national polls less than three months before the kickoff Iowa caucuses, party leaders and donors fear that nominating either man would have negative ramifications for the GOP in the general election, said the Post.

So far, many big-money donors for the Republican party had reportedly yet to commit to a 2016 candidate, and no alternative to outsiders had emerged from the pack of governors and senators, who were struggling to rise in polls.

Former Massachusetts Governor Romney lost to U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012 and announced in January this year that he would not run for president in 2016. Enditem
